North London’s Highgate Fair in the Square, June 2012

I was very pleased, once again, to attend Highgate’s annual Fair in the Square, and to take photographs on behalf of the Highgate Fair Committee.

Despite June being set to be one of the wettest months in the last 100 years, the weather co-operated and we were blessed with sunshine. It was the best attended yet, with over 7,000 people turning up. 130 stalls snaked from Pond Square to St Michael’s church and more than 200 local performers entertained the crowds over the course of the day. Children were spoilt for choice with the climbing wall, bungee fly, arts tent, fire engine hose spraying, balloon art by Miss Ballooniverse and fairground rides. The ever popular Dog Show was inundated with entries. The judges included Lynne Featherstone MP, the Barking Blondes and chief judge, Russell Hatton of PetVet. The principal sponsors of the event were The Ham & High, Benham & Reeves, Cass Art, PetVet, Highgate Society, Goldschmidt and Howland and Day Morris.

Photography Tip – Photographing Children – Shoot them Naturally

Check out my June photography tip – how to get the best results by taking natural rather than posed shots of your children.

Shoot Them Naturally

Babies don’t sit still for long, and older children get bored or start to show off, so trying to get them to pose for a photograph can be an ordeal. Instead, I find it easier to let them play, run around, do what they usually do, and capture them in their environment.

Photos that show them at play, with favourite toys, or giggling whilst chasing each other can show their personalities and trigger nostalgic moments years down the line. Children are less self-conscious when they are distracted and less pressured to look into the camera in a certain way. Always remember to use a fast shutter speed to freeze movement and produce a sharper image.

Gold Track Event, Spa Francorchamps, 4/5 June 2012

Apart from the odd shower, crash and sore head, I’d say a superb time was had by all who attended the two day event at the Spa Francorchamps circuit in Belgium on 4th and 5th June 2012. A group of us stayed at the Hotel de la Source, conveniently located on Circuit Road. We were lucky with the weather on the first morning but it chucked it down in the afternoon, then a glorious second day.  I took a few photos as usual and here are a few highlights, featuring Bill, Bruce, Ian, Sam, Barnaby, Mike, Steve, Maurice, Matt, Xavier 1, Xavier 2, Lionel, Aspen and Kesia.

Friends of Queen’s Wood – Frog Pool Planting (27 May 2012)

I was among a group of FQW volunteers who pitched up on a sunny Sunday morning recently to help plant up the frog pool in order to create a wildlife habitat for amphibians and to increase biodiversity within the nature reserve.

Armed and legged with waders and shoulder high waterproof gloves we cleared the pond of logs and planted dozens of reeds, iris, marsh marigolds, water spearmint, water mint and ragged robin and others.

A week later I returned to take some photos and to see how the plants were progressing. I was delighted to see that many had survived, also to see a male bullfinch visiting.

Queen’s Wood is a wonderful local nature reserve situated in Muswell Hill, between Muswell Hill Road, Onslow Gardens, Connaught Gardens, Queen’s Wood Road and Priory Gardens. There are several entrances to the wood, with the nearest tube being Highgate on the Northern Line.

Ariel Atoms at Donington Park, May 2012

We were joined by two other Atoms at the Open Pit Lane 98db event at Donington Park on Friday 25th May.  It was a glorious day, perhaps one of the hottest days of the year, and it was a case of ‘Summertime and the Tyres are Sticky’.   Here are some shots from the day….
